What is a GC-MS/MS analysis? GC-MS/MS, or Gas Chromatography coupled with Tandem Mass Spectrometry, is an analytical technique that allows the precise identification and quantification of chemical compounds in a sample.
It combines two powerful techniques: Gas Chromatography (GC) and Tandem Mass Spectrometry (MS/MS).
This technique provides greater sensitivity compared to standard GC-MS. Why use GC-MS/MS? GC-MS/MS analyses can be performed on liquids, gases, or solids to separate the different compounds present in a sample based on their volatility characteristics.
These compounds are then introduced into a tandem mass spectrometer (MS/MS) capable of measuring the mass and structure of the molecules.
The tandem mass spectrometer involves two successive stages of molecule fragmentation. In the first stage, the target compound is fragmented into several specific ions. In the second stage, these ions undergo further fragmentation to generate specific fragment ions. These fragment ions are then detected and analyzed to identify the compounds present in the sample.
This allows us to:
- Identify volatile analytes
- Analyze complex matrices
- Perform low-level quantifications
