While the European Green Deal sets the ambition to achieve zero pollution for an environment free of toxic substances, the revision of the REACH Regulation (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization of Chemicals) – aimed at establishing an environment free of toxic substances – is no longer on the European Commission's 2024 work program.

The revision of the REACH regulation aims to reduce toxic pollution and improve safety by banning the most harmful substances in groups rather than individually, in order to accelerate the process. A third goal is to encourage innovation to develop safe and sustainable alternatives.

The chemicals targeted by this revision are:

  • “Forever chemicals”: this group of chemicals contains more than 10,000 substances. Although some PFAS have already been banned, there is a crucial need for global restrictions. Their absorption occurs mainly through food consumption.
  • Polymers: some polymers are endocrine disruptors and belong to the “forever chemicals” group, hence the need for a comprehensive and coherent regulatory reform considering their potential impacts on human health and the environment.
  • Endocrine disruptors.

Exposure to multiple substances should also be addressed during this revision. In real-life professional settings, it is rare to handle a single substance; mixtures are usually involved. The introduction of a Mixture Assessment Factor (MAF) should be integrated into REACH to account for the effects of combinations.
